What we found. 11.8% of the live sites in our study were not mobile-friendly. Wix-built sites were over-represented in that bucket.
Why a Wix site goes down in the first place
Most Wix sites go down for one of two reasons: a Wix plan was cancelled, or a domain connected to a Wix site expired and the owner did not realise the renewal was on a separate bill.
In both cases, the owner cannot fix the problem from the Wix dashboard. The fix needs to happen at the registrar, and the owner often does not know which registrar the domain is on.
Why the site stays down
Wix is a closed system. The site, the editor, the hosting, and the domain management are all in the same place, and that place is behind a login. If the login does not work, the site does not get fixed.
The alternative is a static site. Static sites do not have an editor login. The files are on disk, the host serves them, and the owner can move the whole thing to a different host in an afternoon.
Questions we get about this
Can I get my Wix site back without paying Wix?
If the plan was cancelled, you can reactivate it and the site comes back. If you no longer want to pay Wix, the files can be exported and rebuilt on a static host.
Is a Wix site always bad?
No. A Wix site is fine for a hobby project. For a business that depends on the site for leads, the lock-in is a real risk.
